Just Ask...   What does it all mean?

We have many years' experience in programming, web design, journalism and graphic design. There may well be areas you are not sure about - just ask us.

Govivid works in a clear and staged way which helps ensure our clients are happy with each step in a site's creation. We pride ourselves on our hands-on style.

We don't expect you to be a techie or a geek, so here's some of the things we offer and what it all means in English...

Domain Name purchase and registration. What is a Domain Name?

A Domain Name is an address (eg. www.govivid.net) for the location of a computer (called an Internet server) that offers various Internet services such as web pages and email. It's where everything points to.

We provide Domain Hosting. What's this?

When a Domain Name is purchased it is not automatically assigned to an Internet server. It needs space on which to flourish and grow - getting this space is called Hosting. Once a Domain Name has been Hosted, a Web site can be created and put on the Host Internet Server so Net users can visit the Domain and view the Site.

We provide e-mail forwarding for you Domain. Do I need this?

The Hosting of a Domain Name allows people to send e-mails to the Domain (eg. sales@govivid.net, where the Domain is 'govivid.net' and the e-mail address at the Domain is 'sales'). These e-mails can be stored locally, or can be forwarded to other e-mail addresses. Locally stored e-mails require what are know as POP3 accounts with a single POP3 account being capable of storing the e-mails sent to one e-mail address. It's the same principle as a redirected phone call.

We can set up Autoresponder services. What are these?

An Autoresponder provides an automatic response when an e-mail sent to a particular e-mail address is received. For example, an automatically created e-mail can be created and returned to the sender when an e-mail reaches a certain address - such as catalog_request@govivid.net).

Bandwidth purchase. Do I need this?

Roughly speaking, Bandwidth is the amount of information (measured in bits) that passes from an Internet server to a user when they access a Web site over a period of time. When you first visited www.govivid.net, approximately 200,000 bits of information passed from our Internet server to your computer. So, if you visited our site five times, our Internet server would have passed 1,000,000 bits (or 1 Megabit) of information to your computer.

In order to allow Internet users to access a Domain's Web Site, you must purchase a certain amount of bandwidth. Obviously you don't know how much bandwidth to purchase because you don't know how many people will visit your web site. Therefore, we provide you with a certain amount of bandwidth for free after which you must pay for the bandwidth used at the end of each month.

For a exact quote on how much bandwidth we will give you for free and what the cost of bandwidth is after that please contact us. However, for a rough guide, the free amount of bandwidth may be in the order of 300 Megabits per month with additional bandwidth being charged at approximately 3p per Megabit per month.
